MG TD TF 1500 - MG TF luggage rack

This is my first posting.
Does anyone know if the mg td luggage rack will fit on the MG TF? I know that one is available for the TF, but I prefer the TD style that covers the spare tire. I've seen pictures of this style on the TF. Is it still being made for the TF? I've searched all over the Internet without success.

Thanks, Larry in Alabama

It,
I am sure that they are not interchangeble.. When you say that you perfer the TD style that covers the spare, are you talking about the high mount type covering the spare from the top, or the low mount that covers the spare when it is folded up????
Steve Wincze

Larry,
There are two types of luggage racks used on all the T-series cars that I've seen. Steve has asked the right question about which one you are referring to. I have seen the Amco low mount rack used on a TD with some mods done and did have some nice pictures but lost them when I switched computers. The point is that it can be adapted to use on a TD. I'll see if I can get some more pics from the guy that did his. I haven't seen of talked to him in some time, so I don't know if I can or not. However, I will try. The Amco low mount rack is a prized item and you should grab one if you can.

Hi:
I posted this under the tread "AMCO LUGGAGE RACK" but got not response so thought that I would try again.

I as well would like to have a fold down luggage rack for my TF but they are hard to find. I agree that they look like they are not difficult to fabricate . . . I would like to try. Is there anyone who would work with me by providing pictures, dimensions, traced drawings etc? If the first one turns out O.K. I would consider a short production run with the intention of keeping the price below what they command on e-bay. Also if anyone has access to the "publication descriptions" mentioned in this thread please contact me.

To all,
This is Larry from Alabama again. After my first post, I found the Archive Tab and did a search for "TF luggage rack". Lots of info here and I guess I'm looking for the low rider AMCO LUGGAGE RACK. If anyone makes one or has one for sale, please let me know. Thanks for the feedback. I have a '54 TF (picture below). Best wishes.

Yes the one that covers the TF tire and sits vertically, is an Amco, but don't know why you would want that type. Amco probably developed it that way because they would infringe on the Victor design that is horizontal over the top of the car. It is the original style offered by the factory as an option.
With no luggage, either one works. With luggage and piled very high, the original may block vision with the top up, if your outside mirrors do not work.
With the Amco, when folded down, it sticks out beyond the bumper and can be damaged by other cars etc that get too close - also if it rains or is messy out, the bottom rack will catch s heap of dirt etc.
I have the original Victor and have travelled 45,000 miles with complete satisfaction. Good luck!

Keith:
Maybe you are right. The Amco rack does stick out too far. I have often wondered how much luggage you would want to put that far out back of the rear wheels. The Victor rack though does have the problem of luggage sticking up in the rear view mirror.
Since I have had NO response to my request for help in replicating the
Amco rack perhaps I will devote some time to designing a different rack altogether. Anybody have any input into what the ideal T-series luggage rack would include?

A place for two sets of golf clubs and a couple of suit cases would be my idea of perfect.

Moss in the UK and in the UK sell a rack for the TD called a Runyon. I have one on my TD.

This fits along the slope of the spare wheel when folded up and extends 15 inches beyond the bumper when flat.

It appears to be only for the TD.

Despite the concerns raised above, anything on it doesn't collect much dirt in bad weather. Normal loads do not effect the handling, and frankly any other vehicle that gets within 15 inches of the rear of my car is either crashing into me, or is cause for me to pull over and let the idiot pass.

I have travelled through Europe and the UK using this rack, with enough luggage for two people and all of the heavy spare parts and tools that might be needed on a 2000 mile trip. It works well and frees up all that space behind the seats.

It's a good bit of kit.

A rack that will fit a TF would be of interest to me, without the extensive modifications that the TD rack would seem to require. As an idea, would it be possible to design something which could double as the fastener for the spare tire, and also as the anchor point for the rack? To All,
The Moss rack limits the width of any thing on it by the support arms on each side. The Amco rack can be loaded without any negtive affect to the handeling of the car.

To All:-- I have both a TD and a TF. Both have Amco style luggage racks. As near as I can see the rack itself is the same, it is the short little rods that attach it to the splash pan that are different. So it would be possible to buy the one for a TF and modify it to fit on a TD or vice versa.

I made a rack for my TF that is painted black so I don't leave it on the car except for traveling. It attaches to the chrome phillips head valance bolt and the bumper to support iron bolt (I didn't want to drill anymore holes in the valancel). The platform is about even with the center of the spare tire so it doesn't interfere with the rear view. The biggest problem is that the rear valance to bumper clearance which on my car is only about 3/8". It is made from 1/2" square tubing and is not that difficult to make. I can't seem to locate a picture of it but I will keep trying. Have a good day!
