MG TD TF 1500 - MG T Racing

Gentlemen:

I have in the past entered posts here regarding the mg td which I vintage race, and the importance of passing our "legacies" along to our children (and beyond!). This past July, I had the good fortune to have my two sons help me at the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix held annually here in our hometown; my older son had his video camera with him, and my younger son wrenched on the car with me.

Included is a hotlink to a YouTube video my older son uploaded, to give you a flavor of MG T Series vintage racing; those of you old enough to recall watching these cars racing when they were "current", will enjoy the last 30 seconds or so (turn up the volume!).

I dedicate this video to all of you "regulars" on this BBS who have provided advice, encouragement, and motivation to continue doing this!

Enjoy!

Great! Thanks for sharing. I found "Green Onions" by Booker T and the MG's very appropriate. Good job. Larry

Jeff...

Great...loved it. I'm building a TC for vintage racing right now and can hardly wait. Hope it sounds (and runs) as nice as yours does when it's on the track.

One thing you might need to explain before someone thinks you have a VW engine in back - that is a fuel cell located behind what used to be a TD fuel tank, right?

Way to Go! Another job well done! (Last weekend at Watkins Glen)

Yes, the car has a 5 gallon fuel cell mounted on the driver's side, in the rear, and the battery right next to it. The back of the former gas tank has a cut-out large enough to enclose both, ans there are two pip pins that secure it! (I bought the car this way!).

Leonard:

Yep, but you forgot to tell the whole story: in a filed of 13 cars, I was the only T series car to go out--racing in the rain! I still isist that this car is MORE fun to drive in the rain, than in the dry, as it accentuates the handling and telegraphs exactly what the chassis and suspension is doing!

Well done, Jeff! Thanks for sharing that with us.

I attended several PVGP's while I was living in Pittsburgh, and still try to make it when I am traveling there on business. To anyone who has never attended this event, you are missing one of the best. Do whatever you need to do to put this on your list of things to do at least once. It cannot be matched for the atmosphere of vintage cars on display (thousands, not only British but all nationalities), vintage racing and just the best way for a spectator to enjoy it all.

Thanks again!

Tom:

Yes, I'll be there!

Denis:

I have to admit that my oldest son selected "Green Onions"... but I cannot think of a better choice!

Jeff,

Did that TD ever belong to Bob Collazzi(SP)?
He had one with the same type of gas tank arrangemnet and I saw his car a number of times at Watkins Glen some years ago. Just curious.

Jeff,

I just read the item on the Collier Cup Races and realize that it is the original Bob Collazzi TD.

Congratulations on you T Cup trophy. Sadly we didn't stay for the presentations but opted to drive home through the moonsoons eariler that day.

George:

Yes, as you have concluded, it is the one and same car! Bob did some superb engineering on this car (if I do say so myself), and sold it to a close friend of mine here in Pittsburgh, Joe "JJ" Rodman, from whom I bought the car in 2000. I understand about not staying at the Glen Sunday, as we drove home in a downpour a lot of the trip home to Pittsburgh.

Please, next time you see us at the Glen (we have been there every year since 1994!) step up and introduce yourself!

Which reminds me: those of you within driving distance of Mid-Ohio, the MG Vintage Racers have planned their annual "Focus Event" to coincide with the VSCDA Vintage Race weekend at Mid-Ohio, on October 12-14. Check the MGVR.ORG Web site for details (IGNORE the part about this not being a "spectator event"--a weekend ticket will only cost you $20!), and come out to watch the races. If you do come, please look for us in the garage area, around Garage #17 or so, my car is #514, and introduce yourselves! I owe a LOT to this group, more than you will ever know, in terms of raw knowledge, but also motivation and encouragement! I'LL BUY YOU A BEER!

Jeff,

Thanks so much for the invitation. I will definitely look you up next year. My first year at the Glen was 1949 and then again in 50 and 51 but in 52 I was in the service and in Korea for 18 months. Didn't start to go back until the mid 60's and then got caught up in the Concours thing. I have been judging the concours in town on Friday for about 10 years now and look forward to it every year. I don't know if you get into town at all on Friday but if you do look me up in that area. I also have some of my MG pen and ink drawings in the library (sorry, International Motor Racing Research Center at Watkins Glen) in Town.
Joe Tierno and Dick Powers (MG A's) are part of our club MGCC Western NY Centre and you might know them.
I did the decals for Joe's car (the "Jake's Stables Mule" or as Bob Bucher called it "The Jumping Jackass") When Joe had the car finished. He was using a poor quality Xerox decal and I re drew the design and did a whole bunch of them on white Mylar for him and they are still holding up quite well.

I'm afraid I can't make it Jeff so I'll just have to give you my address to ship the beer to.
