Bruce, I sent them an e-mail and asked about thr power steering and power brakes. They told me an outside firm does there eBay setups and they were sorry. Another person that does not know what they are selling. David....

David, You mean the car DOESN'T have ps/pb? Boy, I'm gonna try to retract my bid right now! 8^) Allen (PS: ' Bet it doesn't have power side-curtains either! How about power door locks?)
Allen Bachelder
Ok... I'm signed in to eBay, and I click on one of the thumbnails and get a page where I have to 'sign in' to my account? Never had this happen before...? Didn't resign in!

Gordon, Same thing happened to me...and I didn't resign in either. Seems a bit strange. Gene

Strange! I just tried again, and it didn't make me sign in. But then, while it didn't happen now, while on ebay often I get the message that the server cannot be found. FWIW, Allen

My TF has power brakes, and they're great! Regards, Richard.
R Payne

Geoff Wheatley of the NEMGTR sent me the attched comments which I here reproduce with permission. I add my experiences following his comments. This is to assist others who might be taken in by fraudsters working the car markets either through eBay or other advertisements. Hope it helps. Lke many other owners of classic cars I often review the Ebay section of Vehicles for Sale usually looking at the MG range with special interest in the T.Type. My interest is simple; what's for sale and how much? I recently saw a 1953 MGTD in nice condition offered for $5,900. (Five thousand nine hundred dollars) You don't have to be a expert to know that this seems a rather low price for such a vehicle especially as the price included transport to my garage. Thinking that there had to be an error in the printed price I contacted the seller, Victoria Peterson @yarhoo.com and asked if that price was correct. I received a reply telling me that the car had belonged to her late husband who had recently passed away and she simply wanted the car out of her home as it brought back too many memories. She estimated the sale price from an offer she got from a local garage. As I had been the first to contact her the car was mine and an official Ebay Invoice came about an hour later on my computer screen. It directed me to obtain a Money Gram from my local Wal-Mart Store and send it to Natalee Matthews San-Jose CA Zip 95125. I contacted the seller asking why a Money Gram was required and she referred me to another Ebay contact aw-confirm@cgi4-ebaymotorspurchase.com. Their response was that to stop fraud they chose an Ebay contact who would forward my payment to the seller and a receipt would be filed back to me for reference. The Email was printed on Ebay headed paper and had all the professional appearance of an official invoice from Ebay. However there was no reference number in respect to the purchase which I found strange and in order to get this number I returned to the MGT car section of Ebay to find that the car had been withdrawn from the auction. Question: Was this because I had agreed to purchase? However the fact that Ebay was requesting that I use a Money Gram when they always recomend Pay Pall seemed strange so I contacted Ebay Security asking why this change in policy. Within two hours the reply came back. THIS IS A SCAM DO NOT SEND ANY MONEY. EBAY NEVER ISSUES AN INVOICE OR GETS INVOLVED WITH THE PURCHASE OFANY ITEM. My reaction was swift, the purchase was off! I sent all the various Emails that I had received to the security people at Ebay and sincerely hope that they catch these people before they try the same thing again on some other poor individual. It was only because of my awareness of Ebay requirements that saved me from being $5,900 out of pocket, also the fact that a 1953 MGTD would never be sold for such a price. But I must admit was tempted to send the money. Every document I received from the scammers looked correct and professional, like the phony checks from overseas banks purchasing your car for more than you asked etc. I always said that I would never be silly enough to be taken in by such a hoax. How wrong can any one be!" Geoff Wheatley December 7th 2007 I had advertised an MGB on this site in the advertisements section and, fllowing the particulars named a price of $900. I received several email enquiries two of which asked for details and price being asked. I thought it a bit odd to ask for the details and price again as they were clearly listed. Smelling a rat, I replied again quoting the details, but this time upping the price to $10,000. Back came two more emails saying "they" wished to buy the car and, after several more email exchanges, was told I would receive bank cashiers cheques in the sum of $16,300 and to hand the balance to their reps when they came to collect the car. This was subsequently altered to send them my cheque for the balance and arrangements would be made shortly for the collection. By this time I was enjoying playing the "sucker" all the while playing "them" along. Shortly thereafter, I received two authentic looking Cashier's cheques and told "them" I would send my cheque as soon the their funds had cleared into my bank account. This produced a flurry of emails telling me I need not wait to have the bank clear the cheques as I could take them to the nearest branch of Giants ( a supermarket 3 miles from where I live) and they would undoubtedly cash them on the spot. After I told "them" I had had the bak look at them and they were now in the hands of the FBI, all correspondence ceased abruptly. The police told me there would be no further action taken as I had not lost any money. I was slightly surprised as I felt that, at least, the counterefeiting of banker's cheques might have been a criminal offence. Caveat emptor or, as P.T. Barnum and Jim Bakker both said, "There's one born every minute".

I had a friend lose $3500. on a similar scam... when contacted the FBI said that $3500. wasn't enough for them to get involved!!! (I mentioned that if 100 people got scammed, that added up to a 'bit' more???? they didn't seem to agree).

Nothing like getting good old hard cash for something you sell. Several years ago I sold a grand piano for $6000.00 and the buyer arrived with a wad of greenbacks. Many years ago I used to sell my company car to a guy in Tenn. and he would come to Detroit with a haulaway truck, buy 8 cars and pay cash for all of them. I did'nt question where the money came from and it was a lot better than bum checks.
Colin Stafford
I wonder what the company said about that?
Geoff Love
Geoff........it was my company!
Colin Stafford
Thought so. Just checking!

Geoff Wheatley has sent me another email this time with another story which, yet again, may be of interest. The nerve of some people! "One more story that will top the list of professional scams! A member of my Motor Club decided to sell his two year old car before storing it for the winter. The car had about 23,000 miles on the clock. A purchaser turned up paid with a certified check and took the car. Three days later returned the car saying that his wife objected to the color etc. The seller refunded the money and put the car away for the winter. Next spring took the car out of storage and drove it, however the car seemed to lack power etc. Took it to the local dealer from whom he purchased the car to be told that the car no longer had the original engine! A worn out unit had been fitted! No trace of the would be purchaser and no trace of the original engine. They get better every time! GW Geoff this came to light after I mentioned the scam that was tried on me re the MGTD. People seldom mention that they have been screwed for fear of being thought a fool!"

His bill of sale should have a paragraph added: All sales final, no cash refunds! I bought the TD 'as is' from a lawyer without a title (or a key!!!) Here is his wording on the Bill of Sale: May 19, 2004 For valuable consideration, the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged, I, Xxxx Xxxxx, of the City of Hamilton in the Province of Ontario, hereby sell and transfer and convey to Gordon Lawson, all my right title and interest in a 1953, black, two door roadster mg td motor car having body serial number TDxxxx and motor serial number TD xxx. Signed, Sealed and Delivered at the City of Hamilton, Ont Xxxx Xxxxxxx I copied that word for word, and have used it a few times when selling big ticket items...notice it didn't mention money!!!!
