MG TD TF 1500 - First Drive!
Drove the TD today for the first time since July 2006. What a thrill! Not exactly finished with it yet- the doors held shut with bungee cords, no lights, dash, bonnet, rad shell, interior, top; bundle of bare wires hanging in the interior, etc. IT was 75 degrees with a clear blue sky - what else could I do! Just threw the old steering wheel on, the floorboards in and set the seats in place, ran a jumper from the hot terminal to the white fuel pump terminal and it cranked right up! Took my cell phone and a fire extiguisher and set off around the neighborhood. Verified tranny, no oil, coolant, or fuel leaks. Wow- is the balanced engine smooth! George

Hi George, Congratulations ! I see you have not driven your car for about 16 months. In 2001,after selling our first acquired TF we had owned since 1976,I was denied driving a T Type for about 4 years while I completed a total restoration on our second TF.'Withdrawal symptoms' set in badly after about 6 weeks and I reckoned I would never again not have a T Type that I could just jump in and go for a blast. Well done on the resto.-another one back on the road. Cheers Rob.Grantham TF3719("Aramis"),TF9177("Athos").

I didn't look under it this morning for puddles, but there was no explosion or gasoline smell when I hit the garage door opener this AM! George

Way to go George, Sounds like you're on your way to some happy motoring. No leaks! What's the secret? Are you sure you put oil in there? Dan H.

So George, does this mean we'll be seeing you at GOF South this year (assuming I get a TC back running?). Gene

George, Hoot to drive when they are "naked"...aren't they! Congrats for getting on the road! I still wonder about "no leaks" ...are you sure you put oil in it? LOL Cheers & Best Regards, David 55 TF1500 #7427

Ok, I checked this morning-there are a couple of drops of oil under the bellhousing. But nothing like before. Still no coolant or fuel. Likely the coolant leak will happen after adding antifreeze! George
George Butz
George, do you still have the classical seals on the crankshaft? Greetings, Huib

George, I'm glad to hear I'm not the only nut driving around the neighborhood with the bonnet off, top down, cell phone, and fire extinguisher - in the winter I might add!! The neighbors think I'm crazy - go figure? Ed Haskell PS: My yellow lab enjoys going with me but she thinks I'm nuts too!

Huib, yes I have the original type seals. I figure with the certain amount of leakage, nothing will ever rust from the engine on back. Ed, I asked my 15 year old to hop in for the drive- he said no thanks, but he would stay by the phone just in case I needed help. George

Glad to hear that you are back on the road again. I know all to well how it feels.
