MG TD TF 1500 - backup light switch plug
Does anyone know the specs for the reverse light switch plug that goes at the back of the TD gearbox? Moss shows it as "not available".

WH - Not sure since I haven't played with back up lights on our TD, but you might check if the back up switch or overdrive lockout switch on a early MGB will work. Cheers - Dave

Mine was in place when I bought the car... takes the power from the brakelight switch power side, then back to the light.

Guess I didn't make myself clear. I don't want the switch. Moss used to sell a plug for the place the switch would go if there were ever a TD owner that would install backup lights. Don't know why MG would have the provision for backup lights in 1950. I don't tend to think of them as being that forward thinking. However, without either the switch or the plug you get a pretty significant drip from the back of the gear box. I want to plug the leak without buying the switch I don't need for way to much money. I don't even have turn signals on my car! I know this whole thing sounds like I'm making it up, but it's real. My factory manual is at the shop, but I was looking at the exploded diagram of the gearbox today and it shows the switch! I an looking at an older Moss catalog right now. 138 on the page with the TD-TF gearbox is the switch (141-100).

| Sorry, don't know what size the 'plug' threads are...however, they would be metric (old or new metric?).... (Your making 1953 seem like the dark ages??? Love my backup light ... appreciate it the same as on my other cars...)

(If you have been driving without it, I would think you would not only having gear oil coming out, you would have 'crud' going in.... you might flush out the gearbox before sealing it up)

Thanks, Gordon. I'll see if can find something to fit. Not to worry about the crud factor. The car is in the middle of a ground up. The gearbox has just been rebuilt.

Gordon is the red light over the license plate on your car wired as a third brake light? Dallas
D C Congleton
Yes it is, I believe a Triumph motorcycle tail light...has the light and license plate illumination. Put on during the '69 rebuild I think, and i really like the extra light (its also a tail light).
