Racing Through Time
At the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix, old means “fast”

Once a year they come roaring out of the past, twisting down the stone-wall-lined switchbacks of the Serpentine, hitting 100 on the straightaways of Schenley Park. It’s the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix, the last car race in North America to use city streets.

“It’s surreal, drifting on four wheels through a curve and knowing exactly where your car’s going,” says Manley Ford (no relation to the automaker), who at 59 is looking for his fourth straight win driving a 1952 mg td (see attached image) in one of the seven races. “We all want to go home in one piece. But that doesn’t mean we don’t really drive hard.”

Ford, who has participated for “at least” 18 years, wrote a turn-by-turn tutorial he sells to drivers. The proceeds, like all money from the event, go to charities dedicated to helping those with autism and developmental disabilities. The 26th Grand Prix is set for July 19 and 20.

At 100 mph in a TD, I don't know if I'd call him Manley or insane.( small humor... very small)

Here's another photo of Manley and his car, waiting on the starting grid at Mid-Ohio (and yes, he'll put on his helmet to race).

Manley has one of the fastest cars on the east coast and had some super dices with Steve Konsin (Lester) and George Shafer (MG TD)...if their speeds weren't 100+ then the other cars must have been sitting still...the difference was that dramatic.

Manley also sells Derrington extractor manifolds...stainless steel and beautiful for TDs and TCs, not sure about TFs but I imagine so.

Larry-

Been there, (Lotus MK6 w/ ZA MG power) and believe me, that race, PVGP, is one of the most exhilarating venues for participants as well as spectators. As noted, it is run in the street, ergo every inch of the course is lined with curb stones. NO runoff. If you stray at 40, let alone 100, you will pay dearly. Have close-up and personal watched Manley blow my MKII off at other events. He and the motorsport leaders of the MG Vintage Racers group, are a sight all should make the effort to see. If you can get to PA, the GP is a true flashback to the 50's and well worth the effort. It also is a great supporter of good causes.

There is a video of The Pittsburg Vintage Grand Prix on You Tube. I am not sure how to post a link but just go to You Tube and look for "Jeff Brown 1950 MG-TD #514 Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix". I would really like to see the race sometime. Paul.
