MG MGB Technical - Mgb Gear box straight cut?

I find that when i drive my mg hard and have it in top gear with the overdrive its practically red lining. I have heard that using a sierra box involves little modification and is simple to do and you have fifth.

However the draw back is you dont have OD which is amazing-what are the options out there?

the engine is uprated and i do need to have a better box as most of the top end power cant be used because the gearing is too low. But i still want the acceleration. i realise that with one you for fit the other.

What are the straight cut gears options out there?

Check the archives for "5 speed". There is lots of information there, including alternate rear end ratios. The 5 speed transmissions generally give roughly the same or slightly lower final drive ratios than the OD.

If your overdrive isn't slipping you will have the same problem with a Sierra box. At 5,000 rpm in OD you should be going about 115 mph?

seb, were in the UK are yxu driving in 4th OD with the needle in the red? That would be somewhere between 120 and 125 mph
