MG MGB Technical - Hidden Driving Lamps

I would like to fit front driving lights without changing the outwards appearance of the car. I appreciate B's always had a Lamp bar with spots and fogs on but I think they look too cluttered.

I am thinking of fitting a pair of very small modern driving lights (Xenon) behind the grill. They should minimise the restriction of air to the radiator. I have the stainless mesh grill not the standard versions. I assume as I don’t have the cooling fans hanging down anymore ( they are shrouded on each side of the rad’) I have the room.

Has anyone tried this? Would the grill badly effect the light pattern?

I think you might have problems at MOT time with them hidden behind a grill, testers don't even like headlamp stoneguards thesedays.

Neat idea though.

David, if you put the light behind the grill, even mesh, you get a lot of light scatter which really degrades the effectiveness of the lights. How about something like I did on my midget, where I cut openings in the mesh just large enough to clear the lens. They show, but are about as hidden as you can make them.

In the UK SVC have a good range of lights aimed at Classics see http://www.s-v-c.co.uk/index.html The new Mini lights are smaller than most spots and can be bought from places like Car Builder Solutions (in Kent) in a chrome version or from SVC in stainless by Wipac. I have a pair I am in the process of fitting so no photo as yet but they suit the grille of the B/C etc better than larger ones I think.

I have this idea that I would replace the idicator/side light units with the US all indicator version and have Angel Eye Spots in the grill.

But this would be getting away from the standard look I have been trying to get and I am not sure what the MOT chaps would do!!

That is probably the best I have seen yet as I don't want to cut the grill and also if the lights were behind the grill the over-riders mean the lights would be too central anyway.

Do you shop at Summit Motors?
I was on hols in UK in late 2006 and purchased some parts there on my way to Heathrow to fly home. The x-ray operator had to take a second look trying to work out what I had in my carry on bag!
