MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Pertronix Upgrade.
I have just received my Petronix upgrade kit for the Mallory twin point dizzy. Should I keep the Ballast Resistor? Petronix recommend you remove the resistor but also say it is Ok to leave it!! I have an unrated coil so I assume this will also be OK to keep. I believe any coil 0.6 Ohm or greater is acceptable. Any help would be appreciated. Dave

I ran a 76 BGT with pertronix (branded Aldon Ignitor) and ballast resistor for three years until I sold the car without any problems. I now have the same unit fitted to my non-ballasted '72 BGT for the past 2½ years and it still works as sweet as a nut. I can't say I've noticed any significant difference in the performance between the two cars with different setups. One thing's for sure though, the Pertronix is a well worthwhile upgrade from a points system IMHO. Sorry my answer is none-too-technical, but car electrickery is not my forte. ;-) ~Mike

From what I read, keep the ballast if using the stock coil. Remove the ballast if using a 'Flame Thrower' or some upgraded coil.

Thanks Gents. I will keep the resistor. It will also mean that if I have a problem with the new setup I can easily refit the points. Dave
